Sand Dunes
March 12, 2011 02:11 PM PST
Disko Pogo presents the latest addition to the DP mix compilation series: Sand Dunes. This compilation is 14 super-cooled laid-back tracks ideal for relaxing in a Balearic style; on a sun-drenched sandy beach with an ice cold Estrella and without a care in the world. Featuring downbeat Balearic styles and deep dubby vibes by artists from Ibiza to New York and from Glasgow to Chicago we at DP want to give you a soundtrack for summer. Subtly beginning with the spooky sounds of Andy Votel’s ‘If Six Was Nine’, we drift into some late-90s Ninja Tune in the form of Funki Porcini’s ‘Mushroom Head’. The Balearic legends Dubtribe Sound System then give us an early classic from their Ibiza influenced days ‘Desert Moon’ on Track 3. The music then drifts into more guitar-led Hispanic dreaminess with A Man Called Adam’s ‘Lost in The Green Light ‘ from 1991, and the gentle cymbal-led dubbiness of YMC’s ‘Hot Cargo’ follows smoothly for Track 5. Ibiza classic ‘You’re Not Alone’ (End Of Time Mix) from Olive follows smoothly on, with the electronic pioneers Kraftwerk nipping back from the beach bar with a little ‘Neon Lights’. The production skills of Hakan Libdo are next put to the test on Track 8 with the piano-laden down-tempo builder ‘Blockheads’, with its dreamy keys and strong piano chords. Next comes a legend of the deep house genre Larry Heard with his After Dark remix of Jersey Streets ‘Brand New Day’, of undeniable quality and power, this is an excellent deep house collaboration from Glasgow and Chicago. Another deep house legend, this time from the UK in the form of Ashley Beedle entertains us on Track 10 with his Black Jazz Chronicles ‘The World Will Rock’, a subtle percussive dreamboat of a track and a tribute to afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. This is keenly followed by the amazing original accapella mix of ‘Who Do You Love?’ from Café Del Mar’s Jose Padilla, one of the godfathers of Ibiza’s Balearic scene. Track 12 crosses to America for some New York style from Alex Delano with Clear Vision and ‘Omato Grosso’ from Francois Kevorkian’s Wave label. Track 13 is another excellent deep house gem from Gus Gus with ‘Sleepytime’, and last but not least you can drift off with the smooth catchy David Byrne vocals on the accapella of X-Press 2’s ‘ Lazy’. 1.
